Kendal Market Hall Regeneration
The Westmorland and Furness Council embarked on a multi-million-pound project to transform the historic Market Hall.
The Duchy of Cornwall is developing Nansledan into a sustainable urban extension to Newquay. The development will introduce a multi-functional market/food hall and will eventually house around 4,000 homes and support local employment.
Client: The Duchy of Cornwall
Project: Development of a new Market Hall/Food Hall within the “Market Street” high street development in Nansledan, Cornwall.
Consultant: Market Curators (Leading specialist market and food hall development consultancy)
As part of its vibrant new “Market Street” high street, the Duchy sought to create a thriving Market Hall/Food Hall. The challenge was to design a multi-functional space that would serve as a significant draw for future residents and visitors, support local businesses, and act as a central hub for placemaking within this developing community. The project required expert advisory support to ensure the market offering was well-planned, financially viable, and operationally sound.
Market Curators was appointed by The Duchy of Cornwall to provide comprehensive specialist advisory support for the Nansledan Market Hall/Food Hall. Their engagement covered multiple critical phases of the project:
Provided consultancy services for the optimal layout and design of the Market Hall/Food Hall
Collaborated closely with the project architects to produce final designs for a space encompassing:
A vibrant food hall area
Flexible co-working spaces
Outdoor areas designated for markets and events
An indoor community hub
Dedicated artist studios
Developed a robust 10-year financial model to forecast viability and sustainability
Delivered a detailed operational model report outlining management, staffing, and day-to-day running
Undertook engagement with local people and stakeholders to gather views on key themes such as potential tenant mix and opening hours, ensuring community relevance.
Market Curators continues to advise The Duchy of Cornwall on the project, ensuring its successful progression and implementation.
The collaboration between The Duchy of Cornwall, Market Curators, and project architects has led to a comprehensive and innovative plan for the Market Hall.
The proposed Market Hall is set to become a significant asset for Nansledan, attracting future visitors and residents by offering a unique and dynamic community space
The project is designed to support local jobs and businesses, providing an exciting venue for existing and future residents, including opportunities for independent street food operators, chefs, breweries, and artisan coffee vendors.
